RCS has been applied to many large-scale intelligent control systems since 1970s. A development methodology, reusable software, and supporting architecting tools have been evolved along the way.

RCS Software Library provides code templates, or generic shell, for RCS controller software modules. The library also provides a communication system called Neutral Messaging Language (NML).
