Meeting Minutes Tuesday 2 May 2006 Telecon In attendance: Fred Proctor, NIST Sid Venkatesh and David Odendahl, Boeing Alan Crawford, LSC Martin Hardwick, STEP Tools Inc. Alan Crawford reported that the LSC person responsible for the part design has fallen ill and is likely to be out for a long time. Impact on their participation in the demo ranges from "nothing noticeable" to "withdrawal". Alan will know in the next day or so and report back. David Odendahl expects to get a concrete answer on Boeing's commitment to the demonstration in a week. The fallback position is that David will take the production "rib" part, tweak it so that it is no longer a real production part, and use this as the basis for the Boeing part of the demo. David asked if NIST would be willing to do the machining and videotaping, and Fred Proctor obliged. David will send Fred details on part geometry, stock and tooling so that NIST can plan for machining and videotaping on the DMG/Siemens 5-axis machining center. Christine Hermetet-Filez of the host organization AFNOR has apparently released the official flyer. Martin Hardwick reported that he was unable to find it on the web sites he visited. Fred will ask Christine where to find the flyer. It may be too late to add logos, but all participants who would like their logos on the flyer should send them to Alain Brail immediately. CNC vendor Okuma is awaiting the official flyer in order to determine their participation; other CNC vendors should likewise get the flyer as soon as it is available to encourage their participation. Martin and Alan discussed some technical issues on feature orientation and the choice of steps v. outside profiles. Martin asserted there is an inconsistency in feature orientation for a slot, possibly an error. Alan will track this down with another LSC person. Martin also said that STEP-Trans generates lots of steps, and that outside profiles are preferred. He suggested that the steps be removed and replaced with either an outside profile or an open pocket. Alan will look into this as well, and report back to Martin on Friday. Regarding a "legacy demo," Alain was looking into their archive of older parts for which only paper drawings or other STEP-hostile formats are obtainable. The parts that Alain was able to find were hard to model in AP-224 or complex in some way that didn't make them suitable candidates to show how STEP-NC can support legacy manufacturing. Fred will follow up with Alain and ask about the search for suitable legacy parts and if such a demo should still be included. The next telecon is scheduled for Friday 12 May 2006 at 2:00 pm GMT. Fred may not be available, but will know in the middle of that week. All participants can dial in regardless of Fred's presence. Action Items ------------ * David will send Fred information on the Boeing part geometry, stock and tooling so that NIST can plan for machining and videotaping. * All will send Alain their logos for inclusion on the flyer. Sid will run this by the Boeing communications person. Martin has already submitted his logo. * Fred will contact Christine Hermetet-Filez about the flyer, which is rumored to be already available. If so, he will notify the participants of its location. * Alan will review Martin's issues concerning feature orientation and STEP-Trans' use of steps, and report to Martin on Friday. * Fred will ask Alain about the legacy demonstration and identification of a suitable part. As recorded by Fred Proctor on 2 May 2006.
