Research and Engineering of Intelligent Systems

Performance Metrics

Thousands of institutions are working on intelligent systems, but without a definition of what that means in a quantitative sense. There currently is no way to measure performance, inter-compare research results, or even to define measurable program objectives. Therefore the need is for quantitative metrics which can be used to assess the performance of a system or of its sub-components.

We are collaborating with academia, industry, and other government agencies to define and develop measures for intelligent or autonomous systems. A series of workshops, bringing together leading researchers from multiple disciplines, was inaugurated in 2000. On another front, we are developing testbeds for autonomous mobile robots.
